Here are a few differences between river and ocean cruising . . .
River cruising is more intimate, with a focus on port-centric tours. There are more buffets and less restaurants. This option also offers more standard inclusions so there is not as much paying out of pocket.
Ocean liners are of course much bigger and so are pools and attractions. There are "sea days" where you are cruising during entire days. Cabins are larger and ocean cruises offer water parks, more entertainment, shopping experiences, fitness centers and unique restaurant dining.
